October 9, 2007 (New York, NY) – Every year, since the first anniversary of John Lennon's death, an enormously talented and diverse group of actors, dancers and musicians has gathered to reflect on the perennial themes that Lennon explored throughout his life and work: peace, love, rebellion, feminism, spirituality and personal transformation. This unique event, born out of an instinctive outpouring of sorrow, has transformed over the years into a joyful celebration of Lennon and the ideals for a better world held so dear. On December 14, 2007, Theatre Within, under the artistic direction of Joe Raiola, presents the 27th Annual Lennon Tribute. The show features a stellar line-up of veteran singer-songwriters who have stayed true to their musical roots and blazed their own creative paths: Marshall Crenshaw, who early in his career played John Lennon in BeatleMania and continues to dazzle audiences with his warmth and musical virtuosity, Steve Forbert, whose new album, Strange Names & New Sensations, has won critical raves, and The Kennedys (Pete and Maura), who remain a favorite on the indie folk scene after more than a decade on the road.
Two outstanding New York City dance companies will present new Lennon-inspired pieces created just for the Tribute: Alexandra Beller/Dances, whose provocative and outspoken work has made Ms. Beller a major force in the dance world, and Wendy Osserman Dance, who recently celebrated their 31st season with a series of acclaimed performances at the Duke On 42nd Street. Also appearing in the show – for the 27th consecutive year – will be standup performance artist Joe Raiola, who’s been touring the country in an updated version of his controversial comic tour de force, Almost Obscene.
All proceeds benefit World Hunger Year (WorldHungerYear.org), the grassroots organization dedicated to finding solutions to hunger and poverty, founded in 1975 by Bill Ayres and legendary folksinger, Harry Chapin.
